Institute of Research, Innovation, Incubation & Commercialization (IRIIC)
AIMS Lab, Brain Computer Interface Research Lab, University Innovation Hub, Center for Digital Health Innovation & Policy Research, and Industry & Academia Collaboration Center for Fourth Industrial Revolution, all under one institute. IRIIC will conduct research, innovation, incubation, and commercialization culture utilizing 4IR technologies in Bangladesh.
The objective of IRIIC is to minimize the gap between academia, industry, and government and work collaboratively to craft social and industrial problems into innovative solutions and build a skilled workforce to lead the 4th Industrial Revolution era. IRIIC will play a pivotal role in creating excellence in research, industry & academic collaboration, promoting a startup ecosystem and innovative nation toward building smart Bangladesh.
In December 2014, Department of Computer Science and Engineering of United International University started a research laboratory named Advanced Intelligent Multidisciplinary Systems Lab (AIMS Lab) to foster computer science research and development in Bangladesh as well as to utilize the benefits of information technology for the society. The research lab focuses on theoretical aspects and applications in the areas of machine learning and data mining, natural language processing, intelligent systems, computational intelligence, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, and embedded systems. This lab is driven by a multidisciplinary team of highly qualified researchers in their respective fields and aims to maximize possibilities for computer science research and applications in Bangladesh.
In 2021, with the support from the Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority, ICT Division we launched Bangladesh’s first Brain Computer Interface Research Lab at UIU. In this lab, we are conducting research on Brain, neuroscience, neural, and rehabilitation engineering and its applications in Bangladesh.
In the last 10 years, AIMS Lab developed more than 25 projects, Among those projects one was successfully commercialized which is CMED Health, an IoT-enabled AI-driven digital Health Platform that is now serving 2 million+ monthly users. Four projects are under commercialization, and many more to come. All projects are solving our social and industrial problems and creating solutions that can generate intellectual property, knowledge, and opportunities for exporting technologies rather than importing technologies to save our foreign currency and contribute to our GDP.
We believe the journey of IRIIC together with academia, industry, and government will contribute to building a knowledge based economy in our country, towards developing an innovative Bangladesh.

Khondaker Abdullah Al Mamun (born- October 5, 1980) is a Bangladeshi academic, scientist, innovator, and entrepreneur specializing in digital health, artificial intelligence (AI), and biomedical engineering.
He is the founder and director of the Advanced Intelligent Multidisciplinary Systems (AIMS) Lab and the Institute of Research, Innovation, Incubation, and Commercialization (IRIIC) at United International University (UIU), Dhaka, Bangladesh.Prof. Mamun attended the Secondary School Certificate Exam (SSC) from Nangalkot A.R. High School, Comilla, Bangladesh in 1995 and Higher Secondary School Certificate Exam (HSC) from Nanglakot H.M. Degree College, Comilla, Bangladesh in 1997.He obtained his BSc in Computer Science and Engineering from Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST), graduating first in his class in 2002. He earned his MSc in Computer Science and Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 2007 and later completed his PhD in Computer Science and Medical Engineering at the University of Southampton, UK, in 2012. His postdoctoral research at the University of Toronto, Canada, focused on AI applications in health and biomedical engineering.
Khondoker Abdullah Al Mamun began his professional journey as a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) in 2003. From 2004 to 2007, he also served as a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Instructor at both AUST and United International University (UIU) in Dhaka, Bangladesh. In addition to teaching CCNA courses, he played a pioneering role in establishing the Cisco Networking Academy Program (CNAP) at these institutions.
From 2006 to 2014, Mamun transitioned to a full-time academic role as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at AUST.
In 2007, Mamun expanded his expertise internationally by joining King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as a researcher in the College of Computer and Information Sciences. His research focused on automatic speech recognition systems.
From 2008 to 2012, Mamun pursued his PhD at the University of Southampton, UK, within the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research. His doctoral research concentrated on biomedical signal processing and the development of human-machine interfaces (HMI) and brain-machine interfaces (BMI). This work laid the groundwork for his later research in health technology, showcasing his ability to merge engineering principles with real-world healthcare challenges.
Following his PhD, Mamun undertook a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada, from 2012 to 2014. He conducted research at the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering (IBBME) and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, Canada’s largest children’s rehabilitation hospital. While at there, Dr. Mamun was involved with the research to develop a communication switch powered by Brain-Computer Interface technology (BCI), for kids who are non-speaking. His training in the PRISM Lab, and with Dr. Chau, provided him with the skills he needed to return to Bangladesh and advance access to healthcare and medical technologies.
In 2014, Mamun returned to Bangladesh and joined United International University (UIU) as an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. At UIU, he established the Advanced Intelligent Multidisciplinary Systems (AIMS) Lab, which focuses on research in intelligent systems, digital health, and innovative technologies.
In 2016, Mamun founded CMED Health in Dhaka, a startup dedicated to the design and development of healthcare delivery systems and digital health technologies. CMED Health’s contributions include innovative solutions such as health management information systems, education management systems, and tools for healthcare professionals. The organization has been instrumental in promoting health inclusion and addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its focus on digital healthcare innovation.
Since 2018, Mamun has served as a Professor of Digital Health and Intelligent Systems in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UIU.
In 2023, Mamun was appointed Director of the Institute of Research, Innovation, Incubation, and Commercialization (IRIIC) at UIU. In this role, he oversees the strategic direction of research initiatives, establishes collaborations with industry and academic partners, and translates research findings into impactful projects. Under his leadership, IRIIC and the AIMS Lab have become hubs for innovative research in Bangladesh, focusing on knowledge transfer and commercialization of technologies.
