Virtual Eye Doc

A Cloud Based Smart Application for Eye Care in Bangladesh

A Cloud-Based Smart Application for Eye Care focusing on vision screening, risk assessment and timely referrals for interventions in Bangladesh. The ultimate result of an eye disease is the loss of vision or blindness. According to the “World Health Organization” every 5 seconds a person or in every minute 12 people is getting blind. In Bangladesh, blindness is a public health issue. Approximately 1.52 percent of the total population in Bangladesh is blind and 150 thousand people become blind every year. To resolve this problem, we created a smart mobile application known as “VirtualEyeDoc”. The clinical validation of the eye has been done initially at Sheikh Fazilatunnessa Mujib Eye Hospital And Training Institute, Gopalganj where 86% accuracy is found as our preliminary result. We already have a lot of trained health volunteers around the country and if we just provide this app to those health volunteers, they can easily perform primary eye screening in rural places. Our app has two main sections. The first one is eye related screenings and the second one is providing some basic knowledge about eye and eye disease symptoms. Besides that, the health volunteer has the ability to refer a potential patient to a specialist or to a hospital which can help to improve the overall eye care situation in Bangladesh. This project is also funded by Information and Communication Technology Division (ICTD)

Abstract

Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, where a significant number of populations are suffering eye health and visionary problems. Over the last decade, a rapid growth of ICT uses has shown in Bangladesh. Thus ICT based health services would be an effective solution for providing the better health services to the citizens of Bangladesh. In this research work, an android based mobile application (Virtual Eye Doc) is developed in Bengali language to support the citizens of Bangladesh for their eye health monitoring and vision examination. The paper highlights our experiences of designing and developing the Virtual Eye Doc application. This paper also presents a qualitative and quantitative exploration of the effectiveness and the perceived benefits of this app, and suggestions for improvement of this app.
