The continent has long been associated with challenges like poverty, infrastructure gaps, and political instability. But that narrative is rapidly changing. Across Africa, bold digital transformations, innovative tech startups, and groundbreaking AI initiatives are rewriting the script. Several African countries are now emerging as examples for the rest of the world to look for inspiration.</p><p id="ember52" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">In the first week of April, 2025, I had the privilege of witnessing this transformation firsthand during a visit to Rwanda, a small East African country making giant strides in digital governance and artificial intelligence. I was there to participate in two major international events that not only expanded my perspective but also left me thinking deeply about what Bangladesh can and should do in this space.</p><p id="ember53" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">On April 2nd, I attended AI4Health, a global initiative led by the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation. I was fortunate to be one of 100 innovators selected from 75 countries for my project, <a class="pcwxHzJDNtENtbMWLKRJNYNnhxmaIdvrpU " tabindex="0" href="http://susastho.ai/" target="_self" data-test-app-aware-link="">Susastho.AI</a> — a Bangla medical GPT that uses generative AI to improve healthcare accessibility for underserved communities in Bangladesh. Beyond receiving a grant, the event created a rare space for collaboration, bringing together healthcare and AI innovators from around the world who are working to make healthcare fairer, smarter, and more inclusive, especially in low- and middle-income countries like ours.</p>								</div>

It brought together over 2,000 policymakers, researchers, tech leaders, and entrepreneurs from 97 countries. The energy was infectious, with big names like Eric Schmidt (Former CEO of Google), Dr. James Manyika (Senior Vice President at Google-Alphabet), Dr. Joy Buolamwini (MIT Media Lab), and African heads of government sharing their vision for how AI can drive sustainable development and address pressing local challenges.</p><p id="ember56" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">The opening session set the tone for the summit, featuring none other than Bill Gates alongside Africa’s top political leaders. What struck me most was Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, who spoke with clarity and ambition about his country’s digital strategy. Under his leadership, Rwanda has invested heavily in AI infrastructure, digital public services, and responsible technology governance — not as a luxury, but as a strategic necessity for national progress. It was a powerful reminder that with the right political will and long-term vision, even a small, landlocked country can aim to become a digital powerhouse.</p>								</div>

The summit witnessed the signing of the Africa Declaration on Artificial Intelligence, a continental commitment to ensure AI is developed responsibly, ethically, and inclusively. A landmark announcement was also made: the launch of a $60 billion Africa AI Fund aimed at nurturing startups, building AI infrastructure, creating digital jobs, and expanding research capacity across the continent. In addition, the summit introduced the Africa AI Council and AI for All — a public initiative to engage young people and future innovators from every walk of life.</p><p id="ember58" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">What impressed me most about Africa’s AI strategy is how grounded it is in solving real, local problems. From agriculture to healthcare, education to climate resilience, African innovators are using AI not for prestige, but for practical impact. Rwanda, Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria have already established AI research hubs and innovation centers. Companies like Cassava Technologies and NVIDIA have built Africa’s first AI Factory, Google has opened its AI research center in Ghana, and Microsoft’s Africa Development Centers in Kenya and Nigeria are nurturing the next generation of AI professionals. In every conversation, there was a clear sense that Africa is no longer content to be a passive consumer of global technologies — it wants to shape, build, and lead its digital future.</p>								</div>

									<p id="ember60" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">Meanwhile, Bangladesh has made steady progress in expanding digital services, financial technology, and mobile connectivity. We’ve seen AI being started to use in a few sectors like healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, and finance. But when it comes to building our own AI solutions, driving AI research, or scaling AI startups, we still lag. Much of our AI and digital transformation activity remains fragmented, with limited state-backed initiatives and few globally visible AI products or services originating from Bangladesh. To build “Bangladesh 2.0,” where we can transform from a nation of technology users to a nation of technology creators, we must invest in AI education, foster research and innovation, and empower our youth to develop solutions for our own challenges.</p><p id="ember61" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">The first step is investing in AI literacy and education at all levels. China starts AI education from grade six, the United Stated of America followed the same. The UK has made AI and data skills mandatory for all undergraduates. Bangladesh must follow suit. Our schools and colleges need computer labs, coding programs, and accessible public data platforms so that students, regardless of their socio-economic background, can learn and experiment with AI.</p><p id="ember62" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">Our universities urgently need to be transformed into centers of innovation rather than mere degree factories. Every educator should be trained in six essential areas: AI &amp; Data Science, Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Environment &amp; Sustainability, Transformative Research, and Academic Management. Without preparing our teachers, we cannot expect to produce globally competitive, AI-ready graduates.</p><p id="ember63" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">I have often said — and continue to believe — that the AI industry will one day surpass the RMG (Ready-Made Garments) sector in Bangladesh in terms of economic contribution. But we must decide whether we are content to remain passive users of AI tools made by others or if we have the ambition to become builders, creators, and leaders in this space. The countries shaping AI today will shape the global economy and geopolitical balance of power tomorrow.</p><p id="ember64" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">Finally, I urge our policymakers to establish a Centre for Excellence in Artificial Intelligence and Development. This center will drive AI-powered digital transformation across Bangladesh’s public sector, fostering innovation, capacity building, and responsible technology adoption to address national development priorities. It could guide the ethical use of AI, fund applied research, nurture startups, and help position Bangladesh as a credible player in the global digital economy.</p><p id="ember65" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">What I witnessed in Rwanda was not a fluke. It was the result of bold vision, decisive leadership, and coordinated action. Africa is no longer waiting for permission to lead in technology — and neither should we.</p>								</div>

<p>The first Bengali medical GPT ‘Susastho.AI’ was officially disseminated in Bangladesh after experimental use among thousands of teenagers in various schools, colleges and universities of the country. Media workers were introduced to the generative artificial intelligence-based web and mobile app at Nasrul Hamid Auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity on Monday, May 27th at noon. In the dissemination workshop Dr. Saleha Bagum Chowdhury, Vice President of the Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Bangladesh (OGSB) Institute of Reproductive and Child Health (IRCH) and Secretary General of Endometriosis and Adenomyces Society of Bangladesh (ESB) was present.<br /><br />It was informed in the event that the app was developed by the developers of Bangladesh with the funding of Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation. By using artificial intelligence, the app will address issues related to Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights and Mental Health (SRMH) of adolescents in Bangladesh, overcoming social taboos, prejudices and shyness. Experimental use has shown that it gives more than 90 percent of their correct suggestions.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></p>

									<p>In a seminar conducted by United International University’s Head of Communication Sumaiya Motiatur, the founder of CMED Health said that CMED Health has developed a generative artificial intelligence (AI) engine called ‘Susastho.AI’ to bring healthcare within the reach of everyone. The app works as a trained chatbot with a combination of Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) and Text-to-speech (TTS) technologies. Susastho.AI is a multi-layered platform that can be used for sexual and reproductive health, rights and mental health education, screening, referral and data analytics through web, Android and iOS mobile apps. As a result, the Susastho.AI app is capable of providing real-time clinically validated answers to questions related to the sexual, reproductive and mental health of adolescents. For now, it is for teenagers but by next December the second edition will be for all ages.<br /><br />He said CMED Health is a health-tech startup that is changing the healthcare landscape in Bangladesh using its 360-degree digital healthcare platform. It seeks to transform the healthcare landscape by connecting more than 4 million people with health care, education, screening, early diagnosis and referral for interventions, and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by ensuring universal health coverage (UHC) by creating a digital health ecosystem.<br /><br />While speaking about the future plans of the Bangla Medical GPT engine, Professor Dr. Khandaker Abdullah Al Mamun said, that initially we started with a team of 20 skilled and dynamic AI expert engineers and Doctors. We are going to publish the second edition by next December. <p>The visit left Zaved Akhter and TIM Nurul Kabir deeply impressed by the dynamic research environment, and the outcome of the game-changing projects sparking a profound interest that led them to express their strong enthusiasm for establishing a collaborative partnership with IRIIC, UIU.</p>
<p>IRIIC, UIU is actively engaged in efforts to promote industry-academia collaboration, a goal that resonates with both Unilever and FICCI.</p>

Zahid Hasan &#8211; Eugene Higgins, Professor of Physics at Princeton University and Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, was the programme&#8217;s special guest. While, Professor Emeritus Dr M Rezwan Khan, Executive Director of IAR, UIU and Chairman of Power Grid, Bangladesh; Professor Dr. Hamidul Haq, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, UIU, Professor Dr Hasan Sarwar, Dean, School of Science and Engineering, UIU and Dr. Zulfiqur Rahman, Registrar of UIU were present in the programme. The welcome address was delivered by Professor Dr Khandaker Abdullah Al Mamun, Director of the Institute of Research, Innovation, Incubation and Commercialization (IRIIC), UIU.</p>

									<div>In the programme, Professor M Zahid Hasan conducted an exclusive seminar on &#8216;Fourth Industrial Revolution and Future Society: The Transformative Impact of Changing Technologies&#8217;. He said that quantum technology will be the most powerful thing in the future. Human life and structure have evolved from this technology. He also discussed the implications of AI, quantum science, and other scientific advancements in the seminar.</div>

<div>Professor M Zahid Hasan has written over two hundred and eighty peer-reviewed journal articles, being the most cited experimenter in the research areas &#8211; the search and discovery of novel phases of matter, emergent new particles, novel quantum effects, exotic superconductivity, quantum magnetism, and Ultrafast and Nanoscale quantum phenomena among others. He worked at Stanford&#8217;s SLAC National Accelerator and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and received the 2020 Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award. He has received the American Competitiveness and Innovation Fellowship &#8220;for leadership in the field of physics&#8221; by the U.S. National Science Foundation. He is listed in the &#8220;World&#8217;s Most Influential Scientific Minds List&#8221; from 2014 onward.<br /><br />The programme included the heads of Departments, Directors, Faculty Members, Researchers, Officials, and Students, among others.</div>								</div>

Developed to address challenges such as limited medical resources and inadequate regulatory enforcement, the DHC model integrates digital health accounts, smart health kits, telemedicine services, and data analytics to ensure continuous health monitoring and timely interventions. In a pilot study conducted across 20 companies, including both corporate offices and factories, the model served 8374 individuals, revealing significant insights into non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes (1.63% prevalence) and hypertension (1.37% prevalence). The study highlighted disparities in health risks between corporate employees (2.52% with NCDs) and factory workers (0.15%), with age and lifestyle being key risk factors. By leveraging digital platforms for health assessments, personalized interventions, and educational resources, the DHC model not only addresses prevalent health issues but also enhances workplace productivity by reducing absenteeism and improving employee well-being. By utilizing local pharmacies as healthcare hubs, SSK not only improves community access to medical services but also addresses medication misuse, thereby combating antimicrobial resistance. This approach empowers pharmacy owners economically and ensures cost-effective healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved rural areas. The SSK model is a significant step toward achieving universal health coverage in Bangladesh, setting a precedent for digital health inclusion in developing nations.</span></p>								</div>

									<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Digital General Practitioner (GP) model, introduced through Aalo Clinics, is revolutionizing urban primary healthcare in Bangladesh, addressing the gap caused by historically rural-focused health policies amid rapid urbanization. Implemented in six pilot clinics, the model served 124,926 individuals, showcasing its acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness. This digital approach enables routine health screenings, early risk identification, consultations, and referrals to secondary facilities. It primarily targets non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension (31% prevalence) and diabetes (24%), particularly among those over 40 years of age. The study revealed significant utilization by women (64.6% of patients), reflecting enhanced access and health equity. The Digital GP model employs an Integrated Digital Health Platform (IDHP) for seamless patient management, enabling paperless records, telemedicine, and AI-driven clinical decision support. By enhancing primary healthcare accessibility and reducing pressure on tertiary facilities, the model is a significant step towards achieving universal health coverage (UHC) in Bangladesh. Its scalability and effectiveness make it a promising solution for urban healthcare challenges in low- and middle-income countries.</span></p>								</div>
